What's next in Mobile Electronics?
Convergence.
For years, the consumer electronics world has buzzed about 'convergence' in the living room. Bringing audio, video and information sources together seamlessly. But convergence is also happening where it makes the most sense - on the road.
Combining GPS/navigation with traffic reporting and MP3, over the air radio, and/or satellite radio on a single screen device just makes sense. Plugging in a hands-free phone device that has the power to override other sources completes the modern communications center.
Voice control is the final element that helps rationalize the fact that one's primary focus should be safely operating the vehicle, with hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
Where these devices have been appearing in new vehicles, you know the aftermarket isn't far behind - if behind at all. All the elements are there for a complete infotainment experience behind the wheel. Watch for the emergence of industry standard integration methodologies to allow the various media sources to work together.
Devices leading the way include the Azentek in-car multimedia PC. www.azentek.com and the upcoming Pioneer AVIC-F500-BT LINC http://preview.tinyurl.com/3bvaso
