MPMC 2008 Report
The SEMA industry held its big press conference event in January in Los Angeles. 100 top exhibitors showed up to meet the automotive press and reveal their top products for 2008.
Our takeaway? The heart of the Performance Aftermarket is beating strong. The theme of most manufacturer's product introductions was quality innovation. Advances in materials, electronics, computer aided design, prototyping and assembly - all contributed to a bumper crop of desirable products. From Comp Cams' "thumpr" - tuned to give a robust exhaust note - to the Corsa DB series mufflers that reduce the exhaust's tendency to 'drone' inside the car, while delivering a "wide open" sound externally. Programmable engine tuning for later cars has taken a step forward with Hypertech's power programmers, with abilities to tune the engine, recalibrate the speedometer, improve automatic transimssion parameters, and set three levels of performance improvement - all without a laptop. This level of control has never seen before in a consumer product for vehicles.
With the average age of a truck in use at 12 years old, and the average age of a car at 8, the aftermarket is working hard to produce products that can make you fall in love with your vehicle all over again.
